The majority of recognized or mixed dog breeds are capable of participating in agility. Agility is not recommended for severely overweight dogs, large heavy boned dogs, or dogs with physical or mental disabilities. No dog is too small (Yorkshire Terriers play agility!); jump heights are simply adjusted to 10", 16", 22" or 26" to accommodate different sizes of dogs. Each dog is measured to determine its required jump height. Dogs under 12 months of age start in a "Puppy" class where the exercises are designed to catch the dogs interest, provide exposure to the equipment, and ensure the dog has an enjoyable time frolicking amongst the equipment. Puppy class exercises do not include jumping at height, or performing any other activity that could stress the soft bone plates. |
